In May 2021, Ordinance 591 entered into effect to impose a permanent ban on the issuance of new short term vacation rental (STVR) permits. New permits can only be issued to properties located within exempt areas of the City. Please also consult the La Quinta's Municipal Code as other provisions may apply to your hosting activity. STVR Taxation
Short term vacation rentals in La Quinta are subject to the Transient Occupancy Tax. The tax is paid by the Guests to you as a Host, and you remit directly to the City tax administration. For more information, check this page. You can register and pay TOT through this portal.
You remain responsible for registering for, collecting and/or remitting any other taxes applicable to your hosting activity.
STVR conditions
A short term vacation rental is the transient rental of an accommodation for no more than 30 consecutive days.
- STVR licensing limitation. Short term vacation rentals permit and business license shall be valid only for the number of bedrooms in a residential dwelling equal to the number of bedrooms the city establishes as eligible for listing as a short-term vacation rental unit.
- Occupancy limits. The total number of occupants allowed to occupy any given short-term vacation rental unit may be within the ranges set forth in the table in Section 3.25.070(B).
STVR Permit and Business License

Short-Term Vacation Rental permit. Ordinance No. 591, adopted and effective May 20, 2021, does not allow the processing or issuance of new STVR permits except in designated exempt areas.

Business License. Operating a short-term rental business requires a Business License.

Renewal. A STVR permit and Business License shall be valid for one year and will need to be renewed on an annual basis to remain valid. Renewal of a STVR permit and Business License shall be submitted at least 30 calendar days before the permit’s expiration date.
You must add the permit number to your misterb&b listing(s) (go to the “Local Requirements” page, via “Edit my listing”). In the absence of a valid permit number, misterb&b may delete your listing.
Maintaining compliance
Your hosting activity must respect all federal, State and local regulations, including without limitations, the City of La Quinta's Municipal Code.
- Nuisance. You must ensure their hosting activity do not create a public nuisance.
- Local contact. You must designate a local contact that shall be available 24/7, with the ability to respond to the location within 30 minutes to any complaints regarding the STVR unit or their Guests.
- Notice of licensure. You must post a copy of the STVR permit and a copy of the good neighbor brochure.
- Notice to Guests. You must provide Guests with a copy of the good neighbor brochure shall be provided to each occupant of the subject short-term vacation rental unit.
- Adequate onsite parking. All STVRs must have adequate onsite parking, that will be determined by dividing the total number of occupants commensurate with the approved number of bedrooms by four, such that the ratio of the total number of occupants to onsite parking spots does not exceed four to one.
- Noise monitoring. An estate home established for STVR use is required to be equipped with a noise monitoring device(s) that is operable at all times.
- Records maintenance. You must maintain records of some information for each STVR transaction made for a period of 3 years. These records must be made available for inspection to the City pursuant to a lawful request.
Third-party rules
You must abide by other contracts or rules binding you, such as co-op rules, CC&Rs, HOA rules, or other rules established by tenant organizations.
