On January 4, 2022, the Rhode Island General Assembly enacted a law to regulate the short-term rental industry. Please also consult the Rhode Island Code (RIC) as other provisions may apply to your hosting activity. For more information, visit the STR portal on Rhode Island's website.

You remain responsible for registering for, collecting and/or remitting any other taxes applicable to your hosting activity.

State registration

All short-term rentals (meaning, tourist rental for less than 30 consecutive nights) must be registered before operating.

  • Registration process. The registration can be completed online. For more information about the registration process (including pre-requisite steps and required documentation), check this official FAQ.
  • Renewal. The registration expires every 2 years: it can be renewed online.

You must add your registration number to your misterb&b listing(s) (go to the “Local Requirements” page, via “Edit my listing”). In the absence of a valid registration number, misterb&b may delete your listing.

Local registration

The State registration requirement is independent of any municipal short-term rental registration requirements. If the municipality in which the STR is located has its own registration requirement, then you must register both with the state and the municipality.
